5 Great Examples And Stories of Obedience in the Bible

Simple Stories That Show What It Means to Listen to God
Big Bible lessons told in simple words β for kids, families, and anyone who wants to understand what obedience really looks like.
Hey there! Letβs talk about obedience.
Have you ever had a mum, dad, or teacher ask you to do something? And you did it β even if you werenβt sure why? Thatβs obedience!
Obedience means listening to someone and doing what they say β especially when that someone loves you and wants the best for you.
God is like the best parent ever. He loves us more than we can imagine. And when He asks us to do something, it is always for a good reason β even when we donβt understand it yet.
The Bible is full of amazing stories about people who listened to God. Some of them were scared. Some of them were confused. But they obeyed anyway. And something wonderful happened every single time.
Letβs look at 5 of the best examples! π
π€ First β what does obedience mean?
Obedience is a big word. But it just means doing what someone you trust asks you to do.
When God asks us to do something, He is not being bossy. He is being a good Father. He can see things we cannot see. He knows things we donβt know yet. So when He says βdo this,β it is always because He loves us and has a plan.

Noah Built a Big Boat
Genesis 6β7 | Noah listened even when it was really hardA long, long time ago, there was a man called Noah. Noah loved God very much. He tried every day to be kind and good.
One day, God came to Noah with a very big, very strange request.
God said: βNoah, I need you to build a giant boat. A very, very big boat. Big enough for you, your family, and two of every animal on earth.β
Now β here is the amazing part. Noah did not live near the sea. It probably had not even rained much where Noah lived. His neighbours must have looked at him and thought he had gone a little bit silly! π
But Noah did not argue. He did not say βthat sounds too hard.β He did not give up halfway through.
Everything. Just as God commanded. Not some of it. Not most of it. Everything.
And then the rain came. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Water covered everything. But Noah, his family, and all the animals were safe and dry inside the big boat β because Noah had obeyed.
After the rain stopped, a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky. God put it there as a promise. And it was all possible because one man said yes to God and kept going even when it was hard and confusing.
You donβt have to understand everything God asks. You just have to trust that He is good. Noah could not see the rain coming. But God could. Obeying God β even when it looks strange β keeps us safe and leads to something beautiful.

Abraham Left His Home
Genesis 12 | Abraham trusted God and went β without knowing whereImagine if someone knocked on your door today and said: βPack your bags. Iβm going to take you somewhere amazing β but I wonβt tell you where yet. Just come.β
Would you go? That sounds a bit scary, right?
That is almost exactly what happened to a man called Abraham. He was living comfortably in his home with his family. And then God spoke to him.
God said: βAbraham, leave your country and your family and go to a land I will show you. I will bless you and make you great, and through you all the families of the earth will be blessed.β
God did not give Abraham a map. He did not show him a picture of where he was going. He simply said: go, and trust me.
Thatβs it. Just four simple words that changed history: So Abram went.
No arguments. No delays. No βbut what if?β Abraham simply got up, packed his things, and went β because he trusted God.
And God kept His promise! Abraham became the father of a great nation. His family became so big and important that we still read about them thousands of years later. All because one man was willing to go, even without knowing exactly where.
Sometimes God asks us to take a step before we can see the whole staircase. Abraham did not know where he was going β but he knew WHO was leading him. When we trust God and take that first step, He guides us the rest of the way.

Moses Faced His Fear
Exodus 3β4 | Moses said βI canβt!β β but he went anywayMoses was a man who made a big mistake when he was young. He had to run away and hide. For 40 years, he lived quietly in the desert, looking after sheep. He was not famous. He felt like a nobody.
And then one day, he saw something very strange β a bush on fire that was NOT burning up. π₯
Moses went closer to look. And suddenly, God spoke from the bush!
God said: βMoses β I need you to go back to Egypt. I need you to stand before the most powerful king in the world, Pharaoh, and say: Let my people go!β
Moses was terrified. He started giving God lots of reasons why this was a terrible idea:
π βBut who am I to do this?β
π βBut what if they donβt believe me?β
π βBut Iβm not a good speaker!β
God answered every single excuse with patience and kindness. He promised to be with Moses every step of the way.
He went back β even though he was scared. Even though he felt weak. Even though he did not feel like the right person for the job.
And God used Moses to do one of the most amazing things in history! He brought the whole nation of Israel out of slavery, walked them through the sea on dry ground, and led them to a promised land. All through one man who said βI canβtβ β but obeyed anyway.
You donβt have to be brave before you obey. You just have to be willing. Moses was scared AND obedient at the same time. God does not need you to be perfect. He just needs you to say yes and take the next step β and He will do the rest.
Mary Said Yes to God
Luke 1 | Mary trusted God with the most surprising news everMary was a young woman β probably a teenager β living in a small town called Nazareth. She was engaged to be married to a carpenter named Joseph. She had a quiet, ordinary life.
And then an angel appeared to her. π²
The angel said: βHello, Mary! God has chosen you for something very special. You are going to have a baby β and His name will be Jesus. He will be the Son of God, and His kingdom will never end.β
Mary was confused. She was surprised. This was the most unexpected news anyone had ever received in the history of the world!
She asked one simple question: βHow will this happen?β
The angel explained that Godβs power would make it possible. And then Mary did something extraordinary. She did not panic. She did not say βno, this is too much.β She gave one of the most beautiful answers in the entire Bible:
In simple words, she was saying: βOkay, God. I trust You. Letβs do this.β
And because Mary said yes β because she was willing and obedient β Jesus came into the world. Christmas happened. The whole story of salvation began. All because a young woman trusted God enough to say yes to something she did not fully understand.
Mary could have said no. It would have been much easier. But she chose trust over fear, and obedience over comfort. Sometimes God calls ordinary people to be part of something extraordinary. All He needs is your βyes.β
Jesus β The Best Example of All
Philippians 2:8 | Jesus showed us what perfect obedience looks likeOf all the examples in the Bible, Jesus is the greatest one of all. He is the best picture of obedience that has ever existed β and He is the reason we can be forgiven when we get things wrong.
Jesus is Godβs own Son. He was with God in heaven before the world was made. He had everything. He lacked nothing. He was perfect, powerful, and without sin.
But God had a plan. A plan to rescue the whole world from sin β from all the bad things that separate people from God. And that plan required Jesus to come to earth as a human baby, to live a human life, and then to die on a cross for the mistakes of every person who has ever lived.
That sounds incredibly hard. And Jesus knew it would be. On the night before the cross, He prayed in a garden and said to God:
βNot what I want β but what YOU want.β That is obedience in its purest form.
And the Bible says:
Jesus obeyed God perfectly β even all the way to the cross. And because He did, something incredible happened. Three days later, He rose from the dead! Death could not hold Him. And now everyone who believes in Jesus can be forgiven, loved, and welcomed into Godβs family forever.
The greatest miracle in history happened because of the greatest act of obedience in history. π
Jesus shows us that obedience is not weakness β it is the greatest strength of all. He did not obey because He had to. He obeyed because He loved us. When we follow His example and choose to obey God β even when it is costly β amazing things happen.
Letβs Remember All 5! π
Here is a quick look at all five examples β so they are easy to remember and share:
π³ Why Should We Obey God?
These five stories show us something really important. Obedience is not just a rule. It is a path. And that path always leads somewhere good β even if the journey is hard along the way.
- π Obedience shows God we trust Him. When we do what God says, we are saying: βI believe You know better than me.β And that trust is the foundation of a real relationship with God.
- πΏ Obedience keeps us safe. God can see what we cannot see. His instructions β in the Bible and in our hearts β are there to guide us away from things that would hurt us and toward things that are good for us.
- β¨ Obedience is how love works. Jesus said: βIf you love me, keep my commandmentsβ (John 14:15). Love is not just a feeling β it is a choice. And choosing to obey is one of the most powerful ways to say βI love Youβ to God.
- π Obedience opens the door to blessings. Every person in our five stories received something wonderful because they obeyed. Not always immediately. Not always in the way they expected. But God always honours a heart that chooses to follow Him.
βIf you love me, keep my commandments.β
π€ So What Does Obedience Look Like for YOU?
You donβt need to build a boat or face a pharaoh! Obedience for you might look like something much smaller β but just as important.
β Being kind to someone who is being unkind to you.
β Telling the truth even when it feels hard.
β Forgiving someone who hurt your feelings.
β Putting God first β in your morning, in your decisions, in the way you treat people.
β Saying yes to God when He nudges your heart to do something kind or brave.
Every single time you choose to obey β even in small things β you are doing something that matters. You are becoming more like Noah, more like Abraham, more like Moses and Mary. Most of all, you are becoming more like Jesus.
And that is a truly wonderful thing. π
βBlessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him!β
